The Department of Jewish Studies at McGill University invites applications for the Simon and Ethel Flegg Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Montreal. The fellowship is for the 2024-25 academic year (August 28, 2024-August 15, 2025). Scholars in all fields of Jewish Studies are encouraged to apply.

The Flegg postdoctoral fellow will make an active contribution to the vibrant Jewish Studies community at McGill. The Flegg fellow will likely teach one undergraduate course per semester during the fall and winter terms and will deliver a public lecture during the academic year. The fellowship for 2024-2025 includes a stipend of $53,000 CAD (plus benefits) for each academic year, in addition to a research budget of $8500. The fellowship can be renewed once (2025-2026).

The Flegg postdoctoral fellow must agree to remain in Montreal during the academic year for the tenure of their fellowship. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong academic record, an ambitious yet focused research agenda, and excitement about the resources available at McGill University and in Montreal. In addition, preference will be granted to applicants who propose introductory lecture courses likely to attract a large and diverse group of McGill students. Proposed courses should also complement existing course offerings in Jewish Studies. Applicants must have received their PhD after June 2020 and have PhD in hand by June 2024.

Applications must be submitted by December 15, 2023 at McGill’s online employment portal Workday and must include:

1) A 650-word statement of interest detailing the proposed research project;

2) a full curriculum vitae;

3) an official copy of university graduate transcripts;

4) a copy of the doctoral diploma or a letter from the Department Chair specifying the defense date;

5) a 650-word teaching statement with course overviews;

6) a writing sample, not to exceed 20 pages;

7) full contact information for 2 people who have agreed to write letters supporting your application. One of these people must be able to speak to competence in teaching. Please note that letters of recommendations are only required for shortlisted candidates. These referees will be contacted through Workday and asked to upload their reference letters.
