Job Description

NREL's Energy Conversion and Storage Systems Center has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing novel characterization and electrochemical testing for Si consortium and fast charge programs. The selected candidate will formulate novel electrolytes, test their electrochemical performance against different types of battery chemistries, and use in-situ FTIR/ATR and other spectroscopic or characterization tools to explore fundamental mechanisms of electrolyte-electrode interactions and their effects on electrochemical performance.

Job duties include, but not limited to:

  • Slurry casting of li-ion battery electrodes
  • Fabrication of full and half-cell coin cells
  • Electrochemical testing of li-ion batteries using potentiostats, battery cyclers, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
  • Building novel in-situ cells that enable direct characterization during testing
  • Interact with large multi-lab consortium, regularly attend/participate/present in group meetings and reviews
  • Helping formulate characterization research plans for next generation battery materials and become expert in other characterization techniques such as XRD, XPS, CT, etc.
  • Publish findings in peer reviewed journals and present research at professional conferences

Basic Qualifications

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Ability to processes/analyze large electrochemical data sets
  • Extensive experience running FTIR/ATR equipment
  • Strong capabilities in interpreting FTIR/ATR results
  • Experience programming electrochemical test equipment
  • Ability to interpret electrochemical data and plan next test steps
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing and documentation skills. Demonstrated teamwork, creativity, innovation, and adaptability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Designed novel operando cells for characterization.
  • Wet chemical lab experience, including precise measurement of chemicals and solvents to formulate electrolyte solutions.
  • Experience using and maintaining atmosphere-controlled gloveboxes.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Postdoctoral Researcher / Annual Salary Range: $71,300 - $117,600
