Job Description

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

This postdoc research position is at the center of swine medicine in the United States and would routinely interact with the Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, state and federal animal health agencies, most of the top twenty-five pork production companies in the US and a wide range of international veterinarians, scientists and producers. The successful applicant will be involved in clinical instruction of domestic and international veterinary students, applied research focused on swine medicine, and field investigations of disease outbreaks in client herds.

This position is a training role focused on clinical teaching, advanced medicine practice, and applied research in swine medicine and pork safety. The successful candidate will receive mentorship from SMEC faculty and take on teaching and research responsibilities. They will work with clients and swine medicine cases, aiming to develop advanced skills in teaching, research, and professional practice. The role includes opportunities for professional networking, presenting at major meetings, and exposure to modern swine production systems. The candidate may also mentor students and is encouraged to pursue a graduate degree or specialty board certification.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• DVM or equivalent from a veterinary college accredited by the AVMA by June 1, 2025
• Valid US Drivers License 

Preferred Qualifications:

•  Veterinary licensure or eligibility for licensure in the State of Iowa

•  Veterinary practice experience

•  Swine industry experience

•  Category II veterinary accreditation under the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program or eligibility for accreditation by the USDA

•  Demonstrated focus on swine medicine
