This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to focus their efforts on developing their expertise and emerging research profile in the field of microbial natural products. The purpose of this research is to explore Australian marine microbes (bacteria and fungi) as a source of new natural products that can inspire new treatments for nematode infections in companion animals (e.g. heartworm infection in dogs) and commercial livestock (e.g. gastrointestinal infections in sheep). 

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Research: Collaborate on research projects, seek and manage research funding, publish in reputable journals, utilize best practice research methodologies, and participate in project discussions.

  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, provide performance feedback and training, and resolve conflict.

  • Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD in organic/natural product chemistry

  • Excellent practical skills and experience in the theory, technologies and techniques of organic chemistry, in particular those associated with natural products chemistry.

  • Hands on experience in chemical fractionation, and in particular the use of analytical, semi-preparative and preparative high performance liquid chromatography.

  • Hands on experience in spectroscopic analysis, including data acquisition, analysis and troubleshooting (NMR, MS, UV-vis).

  • Hands on experience in chemical analysis (degradation, derivatization, synthesis, and Marfey’s and Mosher analyses).

  • Hands on experience in chemical profiling, and in particular UPLC-DAD-MS and GNPS data acquisition, analysis and troubleshooting.

  • Hands on experience in online databases (e.g. SciFinder, Web of Science) as a dereplication and prioritization tool to advance the discovery of novel natural products.

  • A commitment to applying laboratory best practice both for productivity and safety.

  • A track record of publishing natural products research in leading peer reviewed scientific journals.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues on multiple projects.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong organisational and time management abilities, methodical approach, and self-motivation.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check.
