  • Part-time 0.8 FTE, fixed term for 12 months with high potential for extension. Located on the Camperdown Campus at the University of Sydney and a rural research hub

  • Contribute to meaningful research that will improve people’s lives and the environment in the Murray Darling Basin

  • Base Salary $105K - $116K pro-rata + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Networks and Rural Water Management  to join the University of Sydney. In this role you will work on two OneBasin CRC-funded projects that aim to understand and influence how various stakeholders, including community groups and industries, navigate challenges within the context of reduced water availability in the Murray Darling Basin and how sustainable transitions can be incentivised. You will analyse barriers to the adoption of resource-conserving practices on the farmers’ side and interdependencies among decisions of individual farmers as well as bottlenecks at various project, program and institutional levels. The outputs will guide future programs to improve people’s lives end the environment in the Murray Darling Basin.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • conduct research and write reports, scientific publications, and develop presentations of social network maps and case studies

  • work closely with a wide range of stakeholders, including industry partners and government agencies

  • develop collaborative research proposals and research plans

  • develop and deliver research outputs and tools

  • coordinate research teams

    a PhD (or near completion) in a relevant field with a disciplinary background in water/natural resource management,  project management, sustainability science, political science, data science, agricultural economics, human geography or cognate disciplines

  • excellent professional and academic writing skills and oral communication

  • a demonstrated ability to conduct and synthesise systematic literature reviews

  • an understanding of the conceptual framing of network research

  • a familiarity with protocols for gathering (network) data from primary sources (design and implementation of interviews) and secondary sources (such as industry and government reports)

  • experience with data analysis

  • research project management skills and the ability to work independently as the role requires   a need to work in a rural hub location on your own for periods of time

  • familiarity with policy / management / business and socio-economic domains

Desirable criteria - you may have (or be willing to learn):

  • experience of network analysis

  • experience of research or other work in the water policy management / agriculture/ irrigation management / water rights sectors

  • experience of research or practice in community/stakeholder engagement

  • connection/experience of working in Murray-Darling Basin

  • willingness and ability to travel/live in Murray-Darling Basin

  • ability to work in R
